Hi I'm Bart

I grew up in Salt Lake City and am the only LDS member in my family.

About Me

I am a grateful husband and father of 3 sons, 2 daughters and 4 grandsons. It has been my privilege to work with the young men in the Scouting and Aaronic Priesthood organizations for the past 20+years. I serve in the Air Force providing trauma care and teaching. I love to spend time with my family camping, hiking and bicycle riding. I also enjoy snow skiing and traveling and meeting people around the world. As a hobby I restore vintage volkswagens.

Why I am a Mormon

I married very young and after 5 years and 3 children we separated. I felt that I could be a much better father and husband but that I needed support and encouragement. My best friend growing up in Salt Lake City was a member and I remembered the peaceful feeling I had when I was in his home. This was how I wanted my home to be. I didn't know it at the time but what I was feeling was the Holy Spirit that was present in their home. I walked to the LDS chapel at the bottom of the University of Utah entrance to attend Sabbath services. I was greeted by the Bishop and a councilor at the entrance. They welcomed me and asked if I was new. I stated I was just visiting. They said to feel free to ask them any questions I might have or just to ask any of the members. This struck me as a bold statement...just ask anyone and they will be able to answer your question! Sacrament meeting and Sunday School instruction didn't leave an impression but the topic of the priesthood lesson was the First Vision. I remember clearly the impression I felt when I heard this lesson. I felt strongly that this event did occur; that Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ did appear in a personal visitation to the 14 year old Joseph Smith in an answer to his prayer to know in the year 1820 what church was true and that he should join. I pondered on this information and at that moment I knew I had received a witness that that I knew I had to learn more about the Church. I asked the missionaries to meet with me and give me the discussions. I read the Book of Mormon in the next 10 days and received an answer to my prayers that it was true. Over the past 28 years of active Church membership I can firmly attest that I am a much better person, husband, father, and son than I would ever have been without the restored Gospel's influence in my life. I look forward to the day that I meet my Savior and feel his warm embrace and can render my report that I did my best to do my duty and endure to the end.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by showing love and encouraging my family to stay close to the Lord. I have served most recently as the Boy Scout Scoutmaster for our Ward. We have 12 boys who are ages 12-13 and all have received the Aaronic Priesthood and hold the office of a Deacon. We have a monthly camping activity that includes, rappellng, geocache discovering, swimming, kayaking, hiking, biking, and of course cooking and fellowshipping. I assist the Deacons Quorum presidency in developing the Quorum members by helping teach Priesthood lessons each month, providing encouragement for them to progress to the Eagle Rank in Scouting and to accomplish their Duty to God award for Deacons. I also help the Deacons Quorum president to understand the power he holds by way of Priesthood Keys that enable him to best serve the needs of his Quorum members and finally by setting a good example of love and inviting each of them to stay close to the Lord by being good friends/brothers/sons, living the commandments, reading the scriptures and saying their prayers daily. I am a faithful home teacher that enjoys serving with my companion to bless the lives of the families we are assigned to visit monthly. I think we are blessed much greater by visiting with their families than they are by our visits! I am blessed to live near a Temple and and to have the opportunity to serve there weekly. It is a privilege to serve there and to associate with other faithful members. It strengthens my testimony of the divinity of the restored Gospel. Lastly but most importantly I live each day to be worthy of the companionship of the Holy Ghost. To each day be able to feel the promptings of the Spirit and be a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and neighbor. I am grateful the opportunity to serve and be of service to those in need and I strive to meet President Spencer W. Kimball's goal of when I die that I will be completely used up in His service and have nothing left to give.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph was a prophet as was Adam, Noah, Isaiah, Lehi, Alma, Nephi, Moroni, Mormon and others. His work was the restoration of God's Church on the earth in the latter days. He was an honest boy and man who did God's will. His privilege was to receive personal visitations by Heavenly Father, the Savior Jesus Christ and other resurrected beings namely, John the Baptist, Peter, James and John and others. By the gift and power of the Holy Ghost Joseph was given the power to translate the Book of Mormon which is a record by prophets written for our generations from the language of reformed Egyptian into English. Joseph was the instrument the Lord Jesus Christ used to restore His priesthood authority to the earth. He lived in the 1800's and was martyred by a mob's gunfire at age 39 in Carthage Illinois. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. Show more Show less
