Hi I'm Mike Bastian

I am a geek and a Mormon! I was born in California and moved to Utah when I was eleven years old. I served a mission in Oregon.

About Me

I am a software engineer. I am also a husband to a wonderful wife and a father to six amazing children. I graduated with a master's degree in computer science from BYU and a PhD in electrical engineering from Utah State University. I enjoy playing games of all kinds. I also enjoy doing mathematics, physics and solving engineering problems.

Why I am a Mormon

I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church organized by Jesus Christ in the modern era. I was raised in a Mormon family. When I was a teenager, I attended the LDS Seminary next to my high school. I read the Book of Mormon and I prayed about it as Moroni has challenged everyone to do. I felt the influence of the Holy Ghost confirm to me that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I knew then that Joseph Smith was a prophet called of God. It was then that I truly became converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I served a mission is Portland, Oregon and taught many people the gospel. The positive changes in their lives confirmed to me that the LDS Church is the true church.

How I live my faith

I am a man of action. I enjoy serving people that are in need. I have learned that people judge you by what you do much more than by what you say or claim to believe. There are many opportunities for service within the church. However, there are so many in need, I often become discouraged. This is where faith in Jesus Christ and remembering his perfect life helps me to continue to help those in need. I believe that our efforts will make a big difference in the lives of those we serve. I believe that our Heavenly Father will bless us for our service to others.

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

Mike Bastian
I donate 10% of my income to the church because it is a commandment from God. This has been a commandment for a very long time. The amazing part of tithing is the multitude of blessings that come from obedience to this spiritual law. The Bible states in the Book of Malachi that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Malachi says that the Lord will rebuke the devourer for our sakes. The greatest blessing that has come to me from paying tithing is that I have become less selfish. I have learned how to give up something on Earth for blessings from Heaven. Show more Show less

What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

Mike Bastian
Tithing is used to pay for church meetinghouses, temples, administrative costs and other expenses like budgets for local congregations. Show more Show less
