Hi I'm Alissa

I'm a daughter, a sister, and the favorite aunt, though having 5 brothers didn't make for much competition. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am 24 and though my life is not what I had planned or expected, but it is great. I am the only girl with 5 brothers, 2 natural and 3 step. I had always planned on attending BYU and majoring in Elementary Education. I was able to go to BYU for a year but then ran out of money. I knew that I wanted to serve a mission and that meant that student loans were not an option. So I moved back home and started attending the community college. I was able to serve in the Florida Tallahassee Mission and worked mostly on FSU's campus, go Noles! I was only able to serve for 7 months before developing chronic headaches.Yet again, my plans had to change. Now I'm going to school for dental hygiene where I can work less hours, have less stress, and make more money. I still get to work with kids since I help watch my nephews during the week and often during the weekend too. My family, while a little crazy and often dysfunctional, is great and I love spending time with them. There are still bumps in the road, but with the support of my family and the gospel, I can enjoy the ride.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Christ's church on the earth today. The principles and doctrines are true. The Priesthood is the Power of God that allows men to do His work on this earth. Life isn't easy, but with the Lord's help, I can become stronger and overcome any trial. I still remember when I was 11 and my mom told me she was filing for divorce. Suddenly I was the kid that I had previously felt pitied, I now came from a 'broken' home. As sad as I was, I also knew it needed to happen. My father had made choices that were not only self-destructive, but it was destroying our family. He was not only living in accordance with God's commandments, but was verbally abusive, and eventually became physically abusive against me. For years I was forced to stay at my dad's house one night a week until the abuse escalated to road rage and and we were able to press criminal charges. During this time, the only peace I had was from the Lord. As I read my scriptures and prayed, I felt comfort during a tumultuous time. I've also had numerous health problems, the biggest being depression. The devil would never get me to drink or do drugs, for me it was easier to obey than to disobey. However, negative thoughts planted in my head would fester and grow out of control. I knew that Heavenly Father wanted me to be happy, that is what He wants for all of us. I got help, from medication, from therapists, from church leaders, and mostly through the Atonement of Christ. Not only does it cleanse sin, but it makes weak things strong. I still struggle, but I have the tools and Heavenly Father gives me the strength to overcome.

How I live my faith

Right now I am attending a ward, or congregation, specifically for single adults from the ages of 18-31. This provides a unique opportunity to socialize with, serve, and learn from other people in a similar place in life. This also allows us to meet people that could potentially be our husband or wife, an eternal companion. I am thankful that Heavenly Father has organized these specific kinds of congregations to help me through this time of life. Right now I have a calling that allows me to serve the women my ward. I get to help them grow and develop, and learn so much from them. I love getting to know each girl, what makes them who they are, what their experiences have been, and most of all how the gospel applies to their own lives. It is such a testimony to me that Heavenly Father loves all his children and His gospel has the ability to bless everyone if they while choose to follow Christ. The gospel is for everyone. Anyone who chooses to do so, can let Christ and His church into their lives, will be blessed for it.
