Hi I'm Tyler

I'm a professional orchestral musician. I'm in love with New Orleans, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a classical musician. I play the French Horn for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Since I was 15 I knew music is what I wanted to do with my life. I attended the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and most recently was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, MA. Besides music, my favorite hobbies are Crossfit, biking, and getting my wife to laugh.

Why I am a Mormon

Many times throughout my life God has communicated His love, patience, understanding, and forgiveness to me. These experiences have always come to me because of my membership in the Church. The scriptures contain what I can only describe as a unique spirit and power; those who have studied and prayed over the Bible and the Book of Mormon can understand what I mean. I grew up as a member of the Church, but so have many others who have decided to leave. When the arguments of secular atheism sound appealing or resonant, I think how I have been changed by the Gospel, I think of the tangible influence of the Spirit I have felt in the Temple and at Church. I read the Book of Mormon and marvel at the powerful way it teaches of the need for a Savior, and I know that it's true. Anyone else can as well.

How I live my faith

Many men (and women) serve in the Church serve as missionaries, and I served in Quebec from 2002-2004. It was very hard, but it taught me to love others in a way I had never previously been able to. I learned about the life of the Savior, how he went about doing good, blessing the lives of those he came in contact with. More than any other way, to live my faith means to treat others as Christ would have - specifically, by building them up, loving them, and making them feel valued. I am flawed, but my faith and activity in the Church reminds me how important this is and helps me do it better.

Are Mormons Christians?

Tyler
I suppose it depends on the definition of "Christian". If, by "Christian" you mean one who accepts Jesus Christ as the Son of God and their personal Savior and someone who believes in his teachings and tries to follow them, then, yes, Mormons are Christian. If, by "Christian", you mean someone who accepts the Nicene Creed as their creed of faith and the document that defines God and their relationship to God, then no, Mormons are not. We believe that the Bible (writings by God's prophets) and other scriptures show very clearly who God and Christ are, and that no clarifying documents were or are needed to define who God is.
