Hi I'm Samy

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was the first-born to parents who were members of the Church. They learned how to organize their priorities and decided that giving their children the best education possible was worth more than any other material possession they could have. Nevertheless, the costs kept going up, and my parents did not know how to help all of their four children go to good schools in Guatemala. The efforts were made, and thanks to their help, I was able to excel in classes. I was recognized as one of the top 5 students in my country, the national Physics champion, 3rd place in Mathematics and top 10 in Biology in my city. Many doors have opened for me, and now, I'm in college in the USA pursuing a Neuroscience major with hopes to be a Doctor and help my country some day. I love music, reading, running, hiking, traveling and serving others.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because of my parents. Not because they made me become one, but because I have seen how living their faith has made them people of the highest integrity and honor. They are admired by others, and yet, their humility guides me. They aren't famous, they aren't rich or popular. They don't hold PhD's or prominent positions in international business companies. They are just two normal human beings who decided to put God first. I can't say I've never doubted. Doubts come to me every day, but if I stand it is because of the example of those who have come before me. I am grateful for them and I hope to one day be like them.

How I live my faith

Living my faith is a very personal commitment. There have been plenty of times when it would have been easy to give it all up, but I have realized that the covenants and promises that we make when we live the Gospel of Jesus Christ are more powerful than anything else. I do know that my family can be together forever, and I that hopes keeps me going. I run very often, and it helps me a lot. I have not seen my family in three and a half years, which is discouraging sometimes. Sometimes you feel alone, and even alienated, like you don't belong anywhere. It is then that the knowledge of the Gospel helps me. I get to see the Temple and remember that, regardless of where I'm at, I will be able to see my family again. It is the power of those covenants that really reminds me who I am and why I'm here. It reminds me that, yes there are challenges, but that there is always hope to keep moving forward. I remember winning the 1st place in physics in Guatemala. I remember thinking I would feel so much different if I could win it. Nevertheless, I felt no difference. I realized I was the same. Though I got to meet some very important people and be on the newspaper, I felt no different - no greater. Then I knew that that's not really what was important in life. That the most important things in life I have always had: my family, my God.
