Hi I'm Holly

I'm a mom who loves to bake, swim, read good books, play my flute, and blog about my crazy adventures. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the Mom of five beautiful girls and one handsome-as-the-dickens son, who just happens to be severly autistic. I am also the wife of a very smart, very loving, but insanely busy husband. In my spare time (think 10 minute intervals here), I like to read good books, volunteer at the school, play my flute or attempt to play the piano, write in my blog, swim laps, do yoga, bake amazing desserts, catch up with my friends and family via texting and facebook, go to the temple, and watch chick flicks once the house is finally quiet. I once, long ago, received a degree in Instrumental Music Education, but for now I am one of the Moms in the audience, cheering for my girls as they create their own beautiful music. Having a son who is non-verbal and struggles in many, many ways, has changed me forever. I better understand unconditional love, and long-suffering patience, and everyday miracles, because they can be seen in the little things my sweet boy is able to accomplish each day. I am blessed, and very grateful to carry the title Mom.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised as a member of the Mormon faith, and I am so grateful to my parents for teaching me the principles of the gospel of Christ. There did come a time when I was called to share this gospel with others, and I knew that I needed to know for sure that what I believed was true. I knew that I had a Heavenly Father who loved me very much, and that my Savior Jesus Christ had suffered for my sins. But, I struggled to know if the story of Joseph Smith was true. I spent many hours studying his words, and praying to know for myself if he truly did see God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. I remember having to share this message for the first time, still unsure if I believed it. But, as I read the words of Joseph Smith outloud, my heart swelled within me, and I KNEW I was speaking the truth. I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know that my Savior lives, and that it is because of his atoning sacrifice that I have the opportunity to live with my Heavenly Father again one day.

How I live my faith

Each month I have the opportunity to teach the women of my church about the gospel of Jesus Christ. The topic is different every time, but in the past few months, I have taught about Prophets, Repentance, The Gift of the Holy Ghost, and the Sacrament. I love to teach these women. It brings great joy into my life. And, it is very humbling. Many of them are older and more knowledgeable than me, but as they add their insight and comments throughout the lesson, I feel such a connection with them, and my love for them deepens. Once a month I also have the opportunity to visit with three specific women of my church, through a program called Visiting Teaching. Each month, I visit them in their home, and share a short message about the gospel, and catch up with them and what is going on in their lives and mine. It is a fabulous way to get to know other women, and some of my best friends have been a result of these monthly visits. I also LOVE to serve. Right now I am volunteering at the local elementary school, teaching art to a class of fourth graders. I was a bit daunted by this task at first, because I am not really an artist (music is my niche). But, I am learning quickly, and I love to watch these boys and girls as they create. There is such happiness and energy in the room as they create their own works of art. Since my oldest girls are in high school, in the marching band, I help out in that arena as well. To me, this is more fun than service, because I have the chance to use some of the skills I studied in college and put them to use in the "real world". From time to time, I will even bake them homemade cinnamon rolls and cupcakes, which of course, keeps them on my good side. :)
