About Me
I am a father of 6 and a grandfather of an increasing number of grandchildren.... that make's me sound old, but I'm really young on the inside! I love musical theatre and have a passion for foreign languages. Over the years I have researched my family history and now I'm trying to give something back by indexing Family history records. I served as a missionary for the Church in North West France. My family is the most important thing in my life. We live in the UK and always love to tell others how our family has been blessed because of the Church of Jesus Christ and its teachings.. It is the one thing that has helped us as a family more than anything else, not just with religious things but with every part of our lives. We thoroughly recommend it !!!!
Why I am a Mormon
When I was a child, my mother invited the missionaries in, thinking they were selling books! My parents, who were from a Church of England background, joined the Church after hearing their message. But that's not why I'm still a member of the Church today. You can't just accept what you are brought up with. I have spent many years putting this Church to the test. I needed to find out for myself that the things the Church teaches are true, and spent a lot of time questioning, studying and pondering if it all fits together. I don't have all the pieces of the jigsaw yet, but those I do have fit perfectly into place. I cannot find anything at odds with Christ's teachings in the Bible. I have spent my life striving to follow the teachings of the Saviour, and have found it has blessed me and my family as it said it would. I've received the conviction that Jesus Christ has indeed restored His Church in our time. I encourage any who read this.....give it a try!
How I live my faith
It's not just about going to Church, it's about how we live each day. It's about being good neighbours and becoming more like Jesus Christ as we serve others. What's most important to us as a family, is the way the Church helps us be better individuals, spouses, and parents. It helps us be really happy now and provides what we need to become an Eternal Family in the next life. We're certainly not perfect and we make mistakes like everone else, but knowing that our goal is to be with each other forever, we try much harder to love and support each other. Living our faith is really about becoming more 'Christ-like' in our behavior and in our relationships with others.
Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

I suppose you can look at it like this....
We have been so richly blessed with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives. We want to share that with others.
Christ's true Church was always one in which missionaries were sent out to 'spread the word'.
Our missionaries love the Lord and show their love and gratitude to Him by serving Him and those around us. The best way we can serve others, is to let them have a chance to have the blessings of the Gospel in their lives.

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Yes, why not?
I believe in prophets like Moses, Abraham and Noah etc. who received revelation from God in the Old Testament times.
If we say there are no prophets today, I think we would have to assume either:
1. God doesn't love us as much as people in the past....( I don't think that's the case. )
2. God can't talk to people today...( I believe He's all powerful. )
3. We don't need his help today...( Switch on the news!.. I can't think of a time we needed His help and guidance more than we do today.)
4. We may assume that after Christ's earthly ministry, the heavens were closed...(We see from the Bible that this is not the case!)
John the revelator (who wrote Revelations) received revelation after Christ's death and resurrection. Also Paul (previously known as Saul) had a vision on his way to Damascus after Christ's time on earth.
God said in the Old Testament that He would always let his servants the Prophets know what he was about to do (See Amos 3:5)
I know there have been so many false prophets, and people are wary of those who have made such claims. The Apostles warned us that there would be such impostors.
Christ said "By their fruits ye shall know them!"
Even a basic study of the lives of each of the Prophets, down from Joseph Smith in the 1820's, to our Prophet today, shows them for what they were/are- true Prophets of God.
Looking at what PresidentThomas S Monson, our current prophet, does and has done in the many years (over 40) he has served as an Apostle of the Lord, shows him to be exactly what he claims to be.
I am really glad there is a Prophet on the Earth today, who receives revelation from Jesus Christ who stands at the head of His Church.

What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

It is mostly used to build and maintain Chapels and Temples, and to provide other facilities for the Church, such as Institutes of Religion (Educational Establishments). It is also used for the administration costs of the Church (however we do not have paid Clergy).
It is also used to provide members of the Church with things such as learning materials, teaching manuals etc.
We as members of the Church benefit from the beautiful Chapels and Temples in which we meet to worship the Lord.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, as was Moses or Elijah. Through him, Jesus Christ has restored His Church as he did when he was on the earth. Joseph Smith was instrumental in the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, a second witness of Christ.
We do not worship Joseph Smith. The Church is 'The Church of Jesus Christ'.....not the 'Church of Joseph Smith!'
He was a great man who was chosen to assist the Lord in the Restoration of the Gospel.
He helped us understand the true nature of God and Jesus Christ. He was one of their special witnesses.

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is their Savior. Why do we need a Savior?

We believe because of the Fall of Adam, mortality came into the world and we are subject to 2 things:
1. We will all die.
2. We sin and because of that, we cannot get back to God without Christ's help - that's why we call Him our Saviour.
We need Jesus Christ. The solutions to both these problems have been provided for us through what He has done. He allows us to be resurrected and to live again, and He provides the way back home to Heavenly Father.

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

It depends on what you want to know!
They will be sensitive to your questions.
They will usually answer some of lifes really big questions such as:
Is there a God? What's He like?
Is there purpose to life?
Will I live after I die?
Will our family be together forever?
Which is the true Church? How can I know for myself?
Does God talk to men these days?
I'm already happy...why do I need a Church?
and many more!

Are Mormons Christians?

Most definately! The Church is called 'The Church of Jesus Christ'. It is His Church.
Everything in the Church points us to Jesus Christ and His role as our Saviour. Everything we do in the Church is with the intent of becoming more like Him.
He stands at the head of the Church, and guides us through living prophets and prophets.

What is the Law of Chastity?

Basically, as the power to create life is sacred, we are commanded to use that power within the bounds of Marriage, both to bring children into the world and to strenghten the love between husband and wife.
We believe in keeping this for marriage and being true and faithful to our marriage partner when we are married. I can only say that living this law means you have a very speacial trust between Husband and Wife. It really makes a difference and strengthens marriages.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture, a second witness of Jesus Christ.
It is the history of a group of people in the Americas from around 600BC to 400AD, and their dealings with God.
Central to the book is the visit of Jesus Christ to them after his resurrection, fulfilling his words to his Apostles before his death that he would visit 'Other sheep...which are not of this fold'.
The Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith, by the power of God. It was given also as a witness that Joseph was indeed a Prophet of the Lord.... if not, he would not have been able to translate this book.....he had virtually no formal education.
The question needs to be asked if any man let alone one without any formal education could have written this book. Although many have tried, no one has ever been able to come up with any other plausible explanation as to how the book came into being, except in the way Joseph said it did.
The point is.... if the Book of Mormon is true, Joseph Smith was a Prophet and all that he said happened with regards to the restoration of the Church really did happen. If not, it's all a big fraud!
So the Book of Mormon is central to our beliefs without it, nothing else stands.
Millions around the world have read the book of Mormon and now testify it is the word of God.
I have read and re-read this book and know it is true and fits hand in hand with the teachings of the Bible. I add my witness that the Book of Mormon is the word of God.
Give it a read yourself...... Don't take my word for it... I know you can know for yourself!

To what do you attribute the growth of the Church?

People who take the time to really find out for themselves, see that the teachings of the Church make sense and are attracted to it.
It is relevant to all ages, cultures, peoples.
They see the way the Church changes individuals and families for the better. They see how brings even more happiness and purpose to their lives.
I have seen the Church grow in the millions during my life time. I know nothing like it!

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

That's the way the Lord organised it!
Local, lay people are called to serve in a variety of Leadership and other positions (whilst also carrying on in their paid professions). I don't believe it to be because of financial considerations, but the opportunities to serve gives us the opportunity to learn and to grow.
Leaders are called to serve from the general membership of the Church.
Most members of the Church help out in some capacity or another, which means that we don't have one person with everything to do. We are given the opportunity or a 'calling' to serve. We are free to accept or decline the offer.
It's often when you feel you are just about getting the hang of the task, that you are released from that calling. But it keeps you learning as you serve.
I have served in many roles over the years. It has been a blessing to me as I have tried to do my best to help others. I have certainly learned and grown from serving.

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

No.
However, it is part of our beliefs that we should obey the law of the land in whatever country we live, to be good citizens and to vote for people with integrity who will lead the country well.
Some of our members do stand for political office but the Church does not make any political endorsements.

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?
Colin
This is something that has really made sense for me.
If there is a God (which I believe there is), it makes sense to me that if he is all-loving (which I believe he is) it doesn't make sense to me that only some people get the chance to hear about him and get a chance of the blessings he has promised.
What about the millions or billions that have never even heared of Jesus Christ? I can't believe a just and loving God would deny them blessings or cast them aside because they weren't in the right place at the right time to hear about him. What about the millions who have died in infancy or as children who have not had the opportunity to be baptised?
We believe that those who have not had a chance to hear the gospel in this life, will have a chance in the next life.
However, Christ said that you have to be baptised to enter into his kingdom.... you need a body to be baptised... those who have left this life now live as spirits.
So, we perform the baptisms on behalf of those who have gone before us, giving them the opportunity to receive the same blessings. These baptisms are done in our Temples.
This is not imposed on them, it's a matter of offering them the blessings. Those for whom these baptisms are done are given the choice to accept or reject this work.

Do Mormons only help Mormons?

I'm pleased to say No! That's not the case
That wouldn't be the way for Christ's Church to act!
We do not differentiate between member and other people when aid or assistance is required.
The Church is normally on the scene immediately after every major humanitarian disaster, working with other religious and aid agencies as much as possible.
The Church each year contributes millions of dollars in Humanitarian aid.
The Church has a large welfare programme in place which deals with such needs.
Closer to home, of course we assist members of the Church, but we are also encouraged to reach out into our local communities to help in many varied ways to bless the lives of others.
This year in the UK, we (those who are able to) are assisting Local Health Services by donating blood for those who desperately need it during surgery etc. Other years, we may focus on painting a local school who are short of funds, or tidying up a local park.

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

He confirms the truth of things to us.
He does this either through thoughts or feelings. Because of the Holy Ghost we can 'feel' that the things are true. If those things are not true he will not give us those good feelings. Those feelings have been described as uplifting, enlightening.
The Holy Ghost teaches us all things we should do.
For anyone wanting to know that these things are true for themselves, my advice is ask the source of all truth, i.e. God himself, and He will answer that prayer through the Holy Ghost.

I don't know! A 'cult' tends to make me think of something really wacky! ...It doesn't sound like the Church I belong to.
When people really look at the Church, when they see how central Jesus Christ is in our beliefs and how logical the teachings of the Church are, I'm sure they would change their view on it being a cult.

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Temples are not secret but are very sacred to us.
Before Temples are dedicated (that means before they are set apart from the world as a House of God) we invite all to visit and tour the temple and its rooms and to feel the special spirit there.
Tens of thousands of non-members normally take the advantage of these visits when a Temple has just been built. The Church encourages as many as possible to come and visit the Temple, member and non-member alike.
After the Temple is dedicated to the Lord, only members of the Church, who are faithful to the commandments, can attend the Temple (they go through an interview to be able to go). Rather than restricting people, the Church encourages as many as will prepare and qualify themselves to attend there.
It is the House of the Lord, a sacred, special place. There is no secret as to what goes on in the Temple.
We perform ordinances, such as baptism for those who have not had the opportunity to be baptised.
Couples and families are sealed together so they can be together forever... we don't believe in 'til death us do part!'
We learn about God's plan for us and our journey through life.
Everything in the Temple is uplifting and edifying. It is the House of the Lord.

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

DEFINATELY NOT! I couldn't cope with more than one mother-in-law ! I'm joking...she's great really!
At one point in the History of the Church, a small number of individuals were asked by the Lord to practice Polygamy, as there was great need with many widows and orphaned children to be cared for. I don't know if that was the only reason, but the bottom line is the Lord instructed it. It was restricted in it's nature, only a few per cent of the membership being asked to participate.
Just as Abraham in the Old Testament was asked to take more than wife by the Lord, through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord instructed for this to happen again. After a period of time, the Lord withdrew that requirement.
Today, the Lord's instruction is that it is neither required nor allowed. Those who practice Polygamy today are going against the policies of the Church and the will of the Lord. In fact, they are excommunicated from the Church.
Like a lot of issues, the thing to really find out is.... 1.if God lives, 2.if this is His Church, and 3. if He leads the Church through a prophet.
If He does indeed live, and still directs us...we can trust the things He instructs us to do, or not do.

What is the First Vision?

A young boy called Joseph Smith was confused about religion. His family members even went to different churches.
A passage in he Bible encouraged him to ask God in prayer. Joseph, who was 14 years of age at the time, decided he would put it to the test. In a nearby wood he asked God to tell him which of the many Churches there were around him he should join.
Joseph had a vision in response to his questions, in which God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ appeared to him. From this Joseph learned they were not the same person, but seperate individuals with glorified bodies.
They told him that over the years, the religion Christ had taught when he was on the earth had been altered and changed so much, that it was no longer to be found on the earth in its fulness.
They told him to be patient and that, in time, the Church, in its perfect form, would again be restored to the earth.

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Yes. What a great thing to know!
I would consider it very unfair of a loving God to allow us to develop family relationships in this life and then deny us the blessing of being with those we love after we die.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ provides the means by which we can always be together.We are sealed in the Temple as Eternal Families.
This has been the most wonderful experiences of my life.
Knowing that our family can be together for ever, makes our relationships even more special now.

In whom should we have faith?

We should have faith in Jesus Christ. I know we can have full confidence in Him. He alone is the way we can truely find peace in this life and Eternal Life in the world to come. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins if we will come to Him, repent of our sins and continually try to live better lives. We can still have confidence in Him in our every day lives, not just by learning about him as a historical character, but because He was resurrected and He lives today. He is aware of us and our difficulties in life. We can see His hand in our lives, blessing and directing us. I know this is true .... He lives and He loves us.... He is there to help us and to bless our lives.... if we will only allow Him to!

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

We have a Meeting which focuses on the Sacrament (Communion), remembering the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us. We pray, sing hymns and a few people are normally assigned to speak to the congregation on some Gospel topic. It lasts just over an hour.
We also have Sunday School - various classes are available for different age groups. Often there is a class for those just visiting and wanting to find out more about the church. It is informal and you are able and encouraged to ask whatever you want.
In the next classes seperate classes are held for the Priesthood (the men of the Church ), and the Relief Society (the women of the Church). Other classes for Young men and women and children are held suited to their ages and needs.
In all on Sundays it generally lasts about 3 hours...... you can stay for as little or as much as you want to!

What are Mormon women like? Do Mormons believe in equality of men and women?

The women of the Church are great! As daughters of God, they are held in the highest regard by the men and hopefully treated very well by them.
Both in life and in the Church men and women have different roles, but we consider each other as equals, each complementing the other in skills etc.
The women in the Church are wonderful mothers and daughters. They are accomplished and encouraged to develop in all facets of life, to be well educated, and to learn many skills, to be good wives to their husbands and good mothers to their children.
In no way should they be treated as inferior to men.
They are given many opportunities to serve in the church, in leadership positions, as teachers, etc etc.
One of the leaders of the Church noted that we often find it difficult keeping up with them!

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

We recognize that we are going to worship the Lord. If you were visiting the Queen, you wouldn't turn up in jeans (or Levis for any non-uk readers). As we are worshiping God, we make even more of an effort.
Men normally wear a suit or a shirt and tie, and women in modest dresses etc. We are pretty normal folk who just want to ensure that we dress appropriately for worshiping the Lord.
We celebrate pretty much the same holidays as most of the Christian world, Christmas, Easter and local holidays dependant upon where you live in the world.

Why is it important for us to take care of our bodies? Why are our bodies called temples of God in the Bible?
Colin
We believe our bodies are a gift from God which we should take care of. Coming to earth and receiving a body was part of the Great plan of happiness. Our bodies help us progress and become more like God.
We believe that at some time after we die, we will, like Jesus Christ, be resurrected. We believe our bodies will be restored, but to a perfected body, not as it is now, that is subect to pain or death.
Because we believe our bodies to be special, we adhere to a health code (known as 'The Word of Wisdom'), which encourages us to eat heathily and asks us to refrain from taking into our bodies things, such as Tobacco, Alcohol, Tea and Coffee, that are not good for us.
Some may feel this is restrictive... I see it completely the other way.... because of this, I don't have the problems of addiction that so may people seem to battle with these days. So you see, its not really a restriction, it actually keeps us free.... and hopefully a bit healthier!

What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Most definately!
I love to read the Bible. We believe however, that due to the many translations that have taken place over the years, some things have been changed or lost in the translation process. This has caused people to try and interpret meanings in different ways.
Nevertheless, we value the Bible for the wonderful truths it still contains.
The Book of Mormon - a second witness of Christ, helps us to understand the principles we find in the Bible.

What is Mormonism? OR What do Mormons believe?

I would say that the central message of the Church is that Jesus Christ is our Saviour. He lived a perfect life. In Gethsemane he took upon him the sins of all mankind and on the cross at Calvary, he gave up his life. He arose the third day and was resurrected and lives today as a glorified Being of flesh and bones.
He has provided the way for us to return home to Him and enjoy the type of life He has.
Whilst Christ was on the earth He established His Church. After the death of the Apostles, many of the plain and precious truths were lost or changed as men began to argue over points of doctrine, changing it to suit themselves. We believe that an Apostasy took place, when the true Church ceased to be on the earth in its fulness. Thats why there are so many conflicting religions today. We believe that Christ has restored His Church in its fulness again on the earth and he directs His Church today. We believe that The Church of Jesus Christ is that church.

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

It is the conviction, even knowledge, we have that the Church is true. It is developed by Faith in Jesus Christ, studying, pondering and asking God if these things are true. It is confirmed to us by the Holy Ghost as answers to prayer through our thoughts and feelings. It's like when your conscience tells you something is right.
It is further strengthened as we put the things the Lord asks us to do to the test. It is when we do this that we see that the promised blessings come, and we gain a testimony that these things are true.
It's like taking the Gospel for a test drive and seeing that it does what it claims.

A happy Family Life is what most people aspire to. We believe that families are the basic unit of society. Families come in many sizes and forms, but we all belong to a family in some way.
The Church does all it can to strengthen families.
We believe that the family unit can continue past the grave......
we don't believe in 'til death us do part' but that 'Families can be together forever'.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?
Colin
No, But many do if they have the opportunity.
Young Men who are about 19 yrs old are encouraged to serve. Sometimes Young Woman also decide they would like to serve too. At present (2010) around 53,000 young missionaries are serving worldwide.
Where else in the world can you find over 50,000 young people giving up 18-24 months of their own time, (when they are usually busy getting qualified for careers etc), at their own expense, to serve other people? It's extraordinary!
They develop many lifeskills, often learning new languages, and enjoy serving the Lord.
Older couples, normally after retirement, and specialist workers, often like to serve as missionaries, either teaching the Gospel or giving service by participating in a whole range of activities including Humanitarian aid, digging wells for water, Family History work, Farming, serving as health workers, etc etc.
There are so many opportunities to serve in so many ways. This is done voluntarily and most people contribute to their own upkeep as they serve.
As a young man, I served as a missionary in France. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.
Missionary work blesses people's lives. I know nothing in the world like it!

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

As other Christians, we believe the Bible to be the Word of God. There are so many things we can learn from people and stories in he Bible that we can apply to our lives today.
The Bible teaches us of Christ and his teachings. It points us to the Saviour. All the prophets of the Old Testament point us towards the life and mission of Jesus Christ.
It teaches us of his Ministry and his sacrifice for us.
It teaches us Jesus Christ would have us do and how he would want us to live.

Are there restrictions based on race or color concerning who can join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have the priesthood?
Colin
None at all. All worthy male members, irrespective of colour, race or nationality can hold the Priesthood. Our members are from the vast majority of countries of the world.
They comprise of all races, colours, and peoples, from Mongolia to Mauritius, Russia and the Baltic States to Japan, from Ghana to Guatamala, from Korea to Brazil, and most places inbetween.
It might surprise some to learn there are more spanish-speaking members of the Church than english-speaking ones. Twice-yearly Conferences of the Church are transmitted to our Church Meetinghouses worldwide in more than 90 languages.
An American church? Definately not!!!

What is the purpose of the welfare services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

The Welfare services of the Church help those in need. It is not just a hand-out system, but encourages people to work where possible and earn what they receive (to the extent they are physically able to do so). It encourages self-reliance and helps people retain their self-worth.
Work by recipients often blesses the lives of others in need. It is an inspired programme.
Welfare services can also help with family and other issues, and to help people get back on their feet emotionally and financially.

What are some of the ways that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helps those around the world?

Where do I start? .......
Vaccination programs to illiminate diseases such as Measles.
Provision of clean water to arid areas.
Teaching basic hygiene skills.
Helping people to help themselves.... helping them to start planting their own crops and raising their own animals/chickens etc.
Help is given after Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods etc.
The list goes on and on!!!

How do I become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church)?

When you have studied about the Church and what it teaches, and have received your own confirmation it is right, you can become a member be being baptized (as Christ was)
You are then able to recieve a great Gift - the Gift of the Holy Ghost. This gift allows us to have the Holy Ghost as our constant companion as long as we live worthily.

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

We believe it is by grace we are saved through Jesus Christ. Some people understand this to mean all we need to do is believe and your saved, as long as you believe on Christ. They say it doesn't matter how you live your life. This to me contradicts all Christs teachings. Why bother give us commandments if that were the case?
What does Christ's grace and His Sacrifice save us from?
1.The effects of the Fall of Adam - Mortality i.e the fact we will all die.
Through Christ's Sacrifice we will all be resurrected and live again. It is through the grace and merits of Jesus Christ that this gift is given to all men, men and women, good and evil.
But that's not the end to his grace. Another affect of mortality is:
2.That we are separated from God. As we show obedience to the commandments and receive ordinances such as baptism, Christ as our Saviour and Redeemer provides the way to return home to live with Heavenly Father again and to enjoy the type of life they enjoy.
His grace is sufficient to save and bless all men if they will come unto Him.

We certainly do.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. As Jehovah, the God of the Old Testament, He created the earth and all living things in it.
He spoke with all the Holy Prophets and led his people by giving them commandments..
He then condescended to leave His special position on high to be born of a mortal mother. As a child, he astonished the teachers in the Temple with his knowledge.
From the age of 30, he ministered to people around Jerusalem and Galilee, healing the sick, and teaching the people. He established His Church and ordained his Apostles.
We believe that in Gethsemane, Jesus Christ, because He was the Son of God, was able to pay the price for all human sin. He also felt all human pain and grief, so he is better able to help us in our time of need. He died on Calvary and rose the third day from the tomb....as a glorious, resurrected being.
We believe He lives today, and that he directs the affairs of His Church through living prophets and apostles.
Most importantly He loves each of us individually and knows exactly how to bless our lives, both through the good times and also in our times of need.
