Hi I'm Steve

I grew up on a farm in rural Idaho. I'm a teacher, a musician, and a martial artist. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was raised on a small Idaho farm in a large family. I truly admire my parents for all the sacrifices they made to allow me and all my siblings to grow up in such a great environment and for encouraging us to participate in so many activities. They taught us all to have a strong work ethic, to always work to develop our many talents and skills, and to serve others selflessly without reservation. I took those valuable lessons with me through elementary and secondary school with great success. Serving a full-time mission in Brazil also helped to make those lessons a permanent part of my life. I have been teaching mathematics at the secondary and college level since 2003 and have loved ever minute of it. In addition to my deep love for math, I am also an active practitioner of two traditional Japanese martial arts: aikido and iaido. Music is another big hobby. I play a few instruments (piano, trombone, trumpet, baritone) and love to dabble in singing and dancing as well. Programming, gaming, playing most sports, reading (science fiction / fantasy mostly), and watching great and often weird movies also claim a lot of my free time. By far, my favorite pass-time is to chill with my beautiful wife and our two sons.

Why I am a Mormon

Having been raised in the Mormon church surrounded by many other faithful members, I really didn't think too hard about the whats and whys of my religion as a young man. In the few months prior to leaving on my mission, it first dawned on me that I had never actually knelt in prayer explicitly asking my Father in Heaven if the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was His church and if the Book of Mormon was indeed a true book of scripture. So I prayed sincerely with real intent to ask just that. The resulting experience was life-changing for me and has been a source of spiritual strength to me ever since that day. I know that Heavenly Father lives and loves me. Jesus Christ is His beloved son and my Lord and Redeemer. As Christ now lives, so shall I Live by and through Him. I know that the key purpose of the gospel is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. God, in his infinite love, has prepared a way for me to return to His presence with my family for time and for all eternity. The Book of Mormon is a true book of scripture. And together with the Holy Bible and the other amazing words and testaments of ancient and modern prophets, these marvelous books of scripture testify of the divine role of our Savior and of our own divine purpose. With God's help, everything is possible. True, lasting happiness can be obtained in this life and in the life to come.

How I live my faith

I have served in many different capacities in the church. I have had the privilege of being a teacher, a choir director, a leader in the Sunday school, and the pianist for the primary children. Currently, my wife and I both serve as Webelos leaders. To be able to spend so much time around the youth has been inspiring. Their faith is so pure, and their spiritual insight is so very deep. In spite of all of these opportunities to serve and strengthen my faith in the church, my greatest source of spiritual strength is my dear family. I so look forward to spending time regularly with them to discuss the gospel, to play games, or simply to talk and share our experiences with each other.

Is it true that Jesus appeared in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection according to the Book of Mormon?

Steve
One of the most glorious events recorded in the Book of Mormon is the account of Christ's visit to the people in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection. The people were all gathering together to share in the marvels and changes that had taken place over the earth resulting from the long prophesied signs of the death of Christ. While they were thus conversing with each other, Jesus descended out of heaven clothed in white, and He stood in the midst of them. He then allowed everyone in the multitude to feel the nail marks in His hands and wrists and the spear wound in His side so that they could have a special witness that He was their Savior. He then continued to teach the people, to heal their sick, and to bless their children. The love He showed to these faithful people was life-changing and marvelous. What a great testament of His love for all of God's children everywhere! Show more Show less
