Hi I'm Patricia Hiland

About Me

I was born in the Midwest United States and have lived in many states on the East Coast of the United States since I was Married. I am a mom and I work outside the home as well.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I was searching for spiritual truth. I had graduated from college and was looking for a church to join. Two missionaries found me and introduced me to the Book of Mormon and the Joseph Smith story. At first it seemed pretty incredible to me. All the stories about new prophets and angels and new scripture were revolutionary ideas to me. Life changing ideas. As I learned more, I eventually read the Book of Mormon. I did ask my Heavenly Father in prayer to confirm that what these young men were teaching me was true. I know that I received an unmistakable answer that it was true. It has been my way of life ever since.

How I live my faith

I think that what I believe as far as my religion goes really is how I should live my life. What I mean by that is summed up by our 13th Article of Faith, which says, " We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. Indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul. We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. " The reference to Paul's teachings can be found in Philippians 4: 8, 11, 13. I do not want to be like the people described in the Book of Mormon this way, " Now, after the people had all offered up thanks after this manner they returned to their homes, never speaking of their God again until they had assembled themselves together again...." (Alma 31: 23) In other words, I do not want to be a Sunday only Christian. So to live my faith I try to take the gospel principles that I have been taught with me every day. If I make a mistake I admit it and apologize. I give an honest day's work for a day's pay. I try to be kind and courteous and helpful. I strive to read the Scriptures everyday and pray everyday. I want to live every day like Christ might be here tomorrow.

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

Patricia Hiland
Our purpose in life is to learn how to become like our Heavenly Father. We do this by learning about Him and then acting on what we learn. Acting on what we learn is faith. As we learn what to do we begin to change, this is repentance. Then we show our faith and desire to change by getting baptized. Then we can receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost which helps us learn even more about our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. Our purpose is to have joy on our journey back to Heavenly Father. Joy comes from living the gospel. Show more Show less
