Hi I'm Derek

I grew up in Florida. I love to learn, I love to be busy and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Derek and I recently graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Business Administration. I also have an Associate's Degree in Culinary Arts, I guess you can say I just really love to learn. I love hanging out with my friends, taking road trips, watching movies, dancing, reading, meeting new people, having fun and cooking. I guess you can say cooking is truly a passion of mine. I really enjoy preparing a meal for family and friends and then we can gather around and enjoy the time together.

Why I am a Mormon

As a child I was forced to attend a church, they gave me the background I needed to understand the gospel. Eventually I was allowed to not attend there anymore. I was happy for a while but I knew something was missing. I had gone through investigating several churches and while each church was good I still felt as if I hadn't found a church with the fullness of Christ's teachings and His gospel. I always said a prayer before bed then after a death in the family, a service was held for our relative in a nearby church. I sat and listened to the Pastor speak. While there I recieved a spiritual wake up call. I knew I had to do more than just pray at night before bed, I had to go back to church. I immediately thought of my friend whom had invited me to church before. I called my friend and asked if I could attend church with them on Sunday morning. I attended church and met with the missonaries. Once the missionaries shared with me that there are still living prophets today and how His church has been restored, I knew that very moment my search for truth was over. They introduced me to the Book of Mormon. I read the book and I prayed about what was being taught to me and I felt a confirmation from the Holy Ghost that what I was learning was true and that the Book of Mormon was true and that Christ has restored His church on the face of the earth once more. I was eventually baptized and confirmed a member of the church. I love have the fullness of the gospel in my life, I love know that my Heavenly Father still loves me and loves everyone else that He has placed prophets and apostles once more to guide us in these days and that miracles through His divine hand still exist. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church on the face of this earth and that through it we will know all the teachings and all that Heavenly Father wants for us.

How I live my faith

I love to help others in any way that I can. Since I love cooking so much, I love to surprise or bring someone who might be going through a rough time some food made just for them. Serving others has brought me joy and happiness in my life. Every day is anothe opportunity for me to learn to live more like Christ. I know I'm no where near Him but I want to learn to live like Him. At church I've had the opportunity to serve as a missionary for two years in Argentina. There I met many wonderful people, I had the chance to teach and share the gospel of Jesus Christ. I had the opportunity to participate in many great projects to help better some of the communities there. We would donate brand new wheel chairs to those who were in need of them, we helped at local hospitals by giving of our time and cleaned up parks, schools, homes and communities so they could have a better place to live. When I returned from my mission I worked closely with college aged youth and prepared fun activities as well as spiritual ones. I also visit members of my congregation to see how they are doing and if they need help with anything. Each day I'm given an opportunity to try and make my life a bit better and I love enriching my faith.

What is a ward/stake/branch?

Derek
A ward or branch is how we refer to our congregations. A ward is a large congregation and a branch is a smaller congregation. A stake is the grouping of the congregations. Several wards and branches can make up a stake. So a stake has it's own leaders that watch over the wards to help them with any needs they might have. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

Derek
Just going outside and seeing the trees, the birds chirping, children's laughter and how everything works in harmony is proof that God exists. Some might say that this is all due to a big bang and it could very well be but where did that big bang come from? All that is on earth is proof of God's work. Show more Show less
