Hi I'm Ryan Hunter

I grew up in southern California. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm an undergrad student studying physiology. I hope to graduate in the next two years and attend medical school at that great center of higher learning, The Ohio State University! I want to study to become a pediatrician. I recently returned from India this summer, where I stayed for a month doing some work for an American medical charity called Deseret International. It was awesome.

Why I am a Mormon

Great question! When it comes to matters like religion which deal with the very fundamentals of human identity and purpose, who can really claim to have the answers? What scholar, pastor, or professor? No amount of study could ever be conclusive on these issues, but given their importance and urgency, what, then, can be done to find correct answers? I always believed that if there was a God at all, He would not leave us without a way to know Him and the truth to life's important questions. I knew that He must have made a way for us to communicate with Him somehow. I had already been taught about prayer and been encouraged by Bible scriptures that told me that God would show me the way if I would pray in faith. So that's what I did. I exercised some faith and asked my Heavenly Father in prayer if this was really His church and if Joseph Smith really was a true prophet. And my prayer was answered. I felt an undeniable feeling inside from God telling me that it really was all true. And I have based everything in my life on that answer. I know who I am. I know how to be happy in this life - come what may - and I know how to get back home to my Father in Heaven. I know that everything depends on Jesus Christ. I know who I am!

How I live my faith

I don't know whether or not it's cheesy to quote poetry here, but I really like these lines from a T.S. Eliot poem We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. I feel as though that is what the gospel does for my day-to-day living. The teachings of the church throw a new meaning on all my daily activities, from the challenging to the simple, from the exciting to the mundane. Understanding that there is a God who loves us, that we are all part of His family, and that all things can work together for our good changes my outlook on life and helps me see the things and people around me more clearly. And though there are definitely visible, outward ways that I live my faith attending church each Sunday and studying the scriptures daily, for example, for me the greatest difference has been that inward change that brightens the world I am already living in.

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

Ryan Hunter
Because we love to read and hear everything that God has to say to us! We certainly need as much of His guidance as we can get. We love the Bible because it testifies so clearly, in both the Old and New Testaments, of the savior, Jesus Christ. The Bible contains precious accounts of God's dealings with some of His children in the Old world, as well as accounts of the actual life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The Bible is invaluable to our understanding of the Son of God and his teachings. Show more Show less

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Ryan Hunter
It's really just a nickname that stuck. Members of the church were originally called "Mormons" by those outside their faith, and as time went by, the title just got entrenched in the vernacular. The name "Mormon" itself comes from our belief in a book of scripture called The Book of Mormon. It is another testament of Jesus Christ and was compiled anciently by and named after a man whose name was Mormon. Show more Show less
