Hi I'm Shane

I grew up a member of the church my entire life. I became converted at the age of 19 and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up near Albuquerque, New Mexico the eldest of five brothers. I ran track in high school and college (pole vault) and served a mission to the Philippines after my first year of college. After college I went to medical school and then became an orthopedic surgeon. I currently practice in southwest Idaho. My wife and I have been married for 20 years. We have three lovely children and enjoy raising them in the gospel.

Why I am a Mormon

As a young man about to enter two years service as a missionary at 19 years old I had the realization that although I believed the church to be true I hadn't had a spiritual manifestation from the Lord that it was in fact true. With my call in hand to serve in the Philippines I began to worry that my beliefs would be challenged and I would have nothing to reflect upon that would serve as an anchor for my faith. Determined to know the truth I began fasting and praying for an answer. During this fast I read a book on Joseph Smith which began with Willard Richards (an acquaintance of Joseph's) taking the bodies of the slain prophet back to the city Nauvoo, Illinois. It was at that time that the spirit bore witness to me that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and that he really restored the fullness of the gospel to the earth as he claimed. For me the experience was so intense that I jumped up out of my bed and paced the room almost in alarm. It was a feeling of warmth in m chest and reassurance that was unmistakable. Never before or after has the Spirit of the Lord communicated with me in a fashion as intensely as that was. I know that Jesus Christ lives and that Joseph Smith was his prophet. I know that this is the Church of Jesus Christ and that any person sincerely looking for the truth my have an experience that will testify to them that it is true if they seek it.

How I live my faith

My current calling in the church is the second counselor in the Bishopric of the Nampa 17th ward. Since settling in Nampa, Idaho I have also served as Scout Master, Second Counselor in the Young Men's presidency, and Young Men's President. My favorite thing to do in the church is to teach the youth to follow the Savior and His prophet on the earth. There is no better feeling than to know that I played some part, even if at times it was small, in the spiritual conversion to Christ of one of our youth.
