Hi I'm Derwin

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a Civil Engineer (Retired). My specialty is Ice Cream Manufacturing - President of Casper's Ice Cream Co for several years. The Company makes Fatboy Ice Cream Sandwiches. I also taught Civil Engineering at Iowa State University for 15 years. In my younger years i enjoyed racket-ball, tennis, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Now I like to spend time finding my roots and stories about my ancestors. I am a father and grandfather.

Why I am a Mormon

I am an active believer in the Savior. I know he has a plan for our happiness. I am a Mormon because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides the most complete answers to questions such as: Did we exist in some state before we were born? What is our main purpose here on this earth? Is there a life in heaven after this life? Does Heavenly Father know and love me? I received a strong feeling that there was a God in Heaven when I was a teenager camping out under the stars. I knew at that time that the order of the universe and the beauty of the mountains, trees, streams all spoke to me that there is a God.

How I live my faith

I meet with others to worship the Savior every week. I have volunteered to do humanitarian service with my wife. We have lived for several years in countries such as Malaysia, Pakistan, Burma, and Mongolia. Our favorite things to do on these trips were to help organize the construction of water wells, teach conversational English, and work in Orphanages. I have been active in Boy Scout training for both youth and adults. I enjoy my church assignments to visit families in our congregation and assist them with every-day problems -- both temporal and spiritual.

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Mormon church services are open to all. Visitors are welcome. Some who desire to visit get confused about this because we have both chapels and temples. Only worthy church members can enter a Mormon Temple. However, visitors are welcome to attend church services in our chapels. The services will be different that other church's services for several reasons. We encourage families, even those with small babies, to attend church -- sometimes it gets a little noisy. We have no paid clergy so members of the congregation are assigned to give talks on such subjects as faith, repentance, baptism, Jesus Christ, the atonement, the Holy Ghost, latter-day prophets, how the Book of Mormon is a second witness of Christ, the apostasy, the restoration, etc. You will find that members like to linger after the services and visit. You normally will find Mormons very friendly towards you. Stay and visit for a few minutes after the service. Show more Show less
