Hi I'm Russ

I am President and CEO of Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield, have 5 wonderful children, training for a marathon. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have been a hospital administrator for the last twenty years. I currently am CEO of Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield of Catholic Healthcare West. I really enjoy working for a faith based organization. During my 7 years in Catholic Health Care I have come to develop a great love and admiration for the mission of the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy are women religious, nuns, who were started by Catherine McCauley in Ireland in the 1840"s. The mission of our hospital is to "continue the healing ministry of Jesus." That mission aligns with my beliefs. I love being a father of 5 wonderful children. Our oldest is married and teaches 3rd grade our youngest is 10. We have a 19 year old son with Down Syndrome. I have learned that my most happiest times are when I am with my family. The greatest joy I have ever experienced is when I am with my wife and children in sacred places, our home being one of them. I am currently training for a marathon with my wife. I have never run one before and I am working hard at it. My wife and I are finding the running together very fun and looking forward to race day.

Why I am a Mormon

I know that Jesus is the Christ, that He is the Only Begotten of the Father. I know that God lives and I am one of His children. The knowledge of these two divine truths are why I am a Mormon. My desire is to become what my Heavenly Father wants me to become. I can only become that because of and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The understanding the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed through modern prophets helps me find great joy in this life. I can endure the trials and difficulties that we all experience in this life because of what I have come to know through my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints.

How I live my faith

I live my faith everyday by doing the very best that I can. I try to be honest, kind, understanding and loving to all those I come in contact with. Each day I strive to seek inspiration from God as who I can lift. I want to make every person I come in contact with feel the love of God through my actions.

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Most people refer to Mormonism as a "cult" do the continuance of a lack of understanding. When the church was restored in the early 19th Century many new ideas that questioned the status quo were mislabeled. The lack of understanding of the Mormon Church in the 1800's has continued today. I firmly believe that individuals who know Mormons or are familiar with our doctrine and beliefs understand that we are not a cult. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints my first and foremost belief is that Jesus is the Christ, that He is my Savior, that through Him I can overcome my shortcomings and become what my Father in Heaven wants me to be.
