Hi I'm Stephen Barr

I am here so people can see just how many every day people are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

About Me

I am currently a primary school teacher. I teach a grade 5/6 class. I love teaching and my class is fantastic. I studied at Monash University. I joined the church 8 years ago when I was 19, I had a close friend that was a member of the church. I was invited by a Bishop of one of the wards to meet with the missionaries. I polited accepted, thinking in my mind it would be could to learn some more information, never thinking I would become a member of the church. As I met with the missionaries I would think in my mind "What am I doing here?, I'm not religious" but the thing was I just felt really peaceful and calm when I was in the discussions. The missionaries told me that they could not convince me that the Book of Mormon, I needed to pray to Heavenly Father to find out for myself. I did that, I now know that this church is true. I grew up on a dairy farm in a small town in northern Victoria called Strathmerton. I love getting back to the farm when I can. I have a beautiful fiance' Whitney. We are getting married in january 2012. We met at a Young Sinlge Adult or YSA activity that the church runs. My main hobby at the moment is surfing. I love being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It blesses my life each and every day.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a member because I have come to know that this church is the exact same church the Jesus Christ set up when he was on the earth, built upon the foundation of prophets and apostles with Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). When I met the full time missionaries from the church they invited me to pray and find out for myself if this church was true. They did not try to convince me with their opinions. When I prayed I ask Heavenly Father if what the missionaries had taught me was in fact true. I told him that if it was, I will be baptised into his church. I had a wonderful experience where I felt the presence of the spirit very strongly and knew that it was an answer from God. Since that day many years ago now as a 19 year old boy, I have had countless experiences that have strengthen my belief in Jesus Christs' church. The church has helped me to become such a better person, I am always looking for ways to become more like my Savior. If I hadn't of joined I don't feel I would be like that. I am also a Mormon because it brings me such great happiness. I feel so fullfilled know where I came from before i was born and what the purpose of life is, not to mention where we go after death. Each day, no matters what happens I have an eternal pespective. Being a Mormon has helped me to rely on my savor Jesus Christ during times of trial and tribulation. I know I can overcome everything. Also, the people are great in the church. I have made lifelong friends that have strong gospel values, they are great fun to be around.

How I live my faith

Being a member of the church is an every day part of life. I am called as a 'Mission Preparation Teacher'. What this means is, when boys in the church turn 18 and are preparing for missions, they come to the class that I help teach and we help them to learn the missionary lessons and prepare them for missionary service. many students in the class have left on missions to many different countries including, Fiji, New Zealand, Indonesia, japan, America to name a few. It is a very fullfilling calling. I also attend Institute on Tuesdays nights. Institute is a gospel study class where we spend time studying and discussing the scriptures. The book of scripture we study changes each Semester. It is very much a boost to my week attending institute. In the church I also participate in Home Teaching. I am assigned a companion and once a month we go out and visit a few different members in our congregation and share a spiritual message with them and seek to find out if we can help them temporally or spiritually in any way. Once every couple of months I also participate in church service projects where we go and help someone that is in need. Quite often this is yard work. It a great opportunity to work alongside fellow saints. To me, living my faith is a daily activity. I strive to read my scriptures every day including the Book of Mormon. By doing this it helps me to remember Jesus Christ and gives me added strength to be more like him. It could be that I need to be more patient, more forgiving or more understanding, whatever it is the Gospel helps me become the best me there is!
