Hi I'm Garth

I live near and work in "Sin City!" The summer heat is reminiscent of "Hades." Any place for a family? I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a solid Mormon town in Utah. I have been asked by many if I'm from Texas. I must have a drawl of some sort, even though I haven'd lived in Utah for 29 years. My reaction to a phone call asking me to move my family to Las Vegas for work was, "Can you raise a family in Las Vegas?" We had 7 children and all we knew about Las Vegas is what can be seen from the I-15 freeway. My family means everything to me! Would the lights and glamour and glitz of Vegas be too much? I am a teacher by profession, my wife a very talented and busy full time mother. It has been 15 years since then, and it has been a very good ride. Can you raise a family in Las Vegas? You sure can, and a very good one at that. Can you raise a family on a teacher's salary, with one income? You sure can! Can I just say that its fun being a dad, and it is mighty fun being a grandpa (19 grand kidos). And my wife echoes the same! We enjoy traveling and site seeing; what an education that can be. We've done camping and hiking and outdoor sports. I enjoy racquetball and ping pong and water and snow skiing. Life is good and I am the most blessed man I know.

Why I am a Mormon

Some might say, "Well, you're a Mormon, because you were born a Mormon! But everyone must come to their own testimony of whether or not this Faith has the answers. I leaned on mom and dad's testimonies for several years. But as a young new missionary in Japan. I had to find out quickly it was what I believed and if I was wholly converted. It just would not carry much power to tell someone that my mother said the Book of Mormon was True. I had to share from my own experience that I knew that God lives, that Christ is my Savior, that He called again prophets to restore His Church to the Earth. I came to know those things personally through prayer and study, through testing and living. I know for myself God hears and answers prayers, my prayers! Revelation is alive and well, God talks with men, his children, today. The Gift of the Holy Ghost is here on the Earth, that is how God communicates with His children most often. I love the Bible and study it regularly. I also read and study the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. I look to the words of His Living Apostles and Prophets. I love knowing the purpose of life, why I am here and what my eternal potential is. This Church has answers. It has answers to life's most difficult questions. Read the Book of Mormon and ask God in sincere prayer to tell you that it is true, He will, he promised that he will. I have read that book nearly 50 times. Each time I ask for a confirming witness. He hasn't ever let me down.

How I live my faith

The Church means everything to me. I can't imagine trying to raise a family without it. It gives me a purpose, vision and direction. Does my Faith influence my life? Every aspect! When I was dating my wife, I found out that she loved someone else more than me! When I learn that, I asked her to marry me! She said, Yes! We have been happily married for 35 years and I am still not her first love. But I am not jealous one bit. In fact she knows that it is the same with me. Because we put God first in our lives, we can love each other more, more purely, more powerfully. Marriage and family is central to Heavenly Father's Plan. Because of our faith, our faithfulness and fidelity in marriage, our covenants and the ordinance of Temple marriage (called Sealing), we know that we can be together forever. This Church isn't just a "Sunday, go the meet'n" kind of religion. It is a way of life. It is a 24/7 way to look at life. Over the years we have looked to scripture daily as a family to see the right way to live and be happy. We have living prophets in the Church to give us further guidance and direction. I love listening and reading the words of Christ's living mouth pieces. They are so helpful as a father and grandfather. I teach and work with college age young adults and strive to help them choose healthy pathways in their lives. I serve about 4,500 Church members in our geographic area, referred to as a Stake. My Faith is a way of life, and it is a good life!
