Hi I'm Karen Elizabeth

About Me

I was born in central Illinois, grew up in the Chicago area, and lived in Florida & Virginia before returning to central Illinois. I am a mom with an adult daughter, a teenage son & teenage daughter, and a baby who has gone home to Heaven already. I married my best friend in the Washington DC temple. As you can see, I am a Scout leader and I have not only completed the Wood Badge Course as a participant, I am a "staffer" on a second Wood Badge course since I completed my own. Wood Badge is the highest level of adult leader training in Boy Scouts.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been a member of the church all my life. When I was young I had many special experiences with the Spirit letting me know the truth of the gospel. When I was 9 years old, I was in a car accident with my mother in which I almost died. The doctors even told my parents that if I lived, I would be a vegetable. My parents called our home teachers (two priesthood holders who visited our family to serve and strengthen us spiritually) to come to the hospital and give me a Priesthood blessing. Thanks to that blessing, not only did I survive the accident, I dont' have any after effects from it. I am not a vegetable, and my body fully healed. Later, I stopped attending church, not because I didn't believe in the church, but I didn't believe in me and couldn't understand how Heavenly Father could believe in me. After returning to full activity in the church, I realized that my Heavenly Father not only knows me by name, but He loves me unconditionally. I know my Heavenly Father loves me, and that Jesus sacrificed all for me. I know that the scriptures are the word of God. I know that the Bible is inspired, and true as far as it is translated correctly. I have read the Book of Mormon and prayed about it. I know that is is true and the most correct of any book. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, called to restore the church to the earth, that he has done more than any other man beside Jesus Christ, for the salvation of man. I know we are led by a prophet today, Thomas S. Monson. I love our prophet, for his teachings and the way he gives simple truth in a way that is clear to understand. How do I know? I have prayed about these things and felt a warm, happy feeling in my heart. I feel a "burning in my bosom". It is a feeling that you too can understand if you try it. I am grateful to be alive today when the gospel is here on earth in it's fullness. I'm grateful to be a member of the church.

How I live my faith

I love to attend church every Sunday. Because my family and I are in a smaller unit, we have more opportunities to serve others. I am currently the music leader at our group. I choose the hymns for our main worship meeting, and then play the organ for the church service. I am humbled by this opportunity, because I know so many other people who are more talented, but I am also honored by this chance. I also help in the Scouting programs, both Cub Scouts as a Webelos leader and Boy Scouts, helping the 11 year old Scouts.

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Karen Elizabeth
I can receive blessing of knowledge and understanding when I read the scriptures. When I am experiencing difficulties, and prayerfully turn to the Scriptures, I always find either answers to questions, or comfort in facing difficulties. Show more Show less
