Hi I'm Amanda Janelle

My faith is the central force in my life. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I'm Amanda. I'm married to a wonderful man named Jim. We have a daughter and son who are only 13 months apart in age, so life is never dull in our home. I am the first of nine children. Because my family moved frequently in my childhood, my sisters and brothers became my best friends. Now that we are adults scattered across seven of the United States, we are still extremely close. I love big family gatherings for holidays and weddings. For years I was a high school English teacher. I loved working with teenagers. They have a fresh perspective on life and a wonderful enthusiasm for new adventures. I might have been the teacher, but my students taught me something new every day. Through the literature we read, my students and I got to travel through cultures and history without ever leaving our school. Two days after our daughter was born, I resigned from my teaching job to be a stay at home mother. Nothing brings me more joy than watching my own children learn and grow. Because they are mirrors of me and my husband, I am constantly improving myself because of them as well. My husband and I share a lot of interests. In the warm months, we can be found outdoors on one of the many great trails in our area. In colder weather, we love playing board and card games. Year round, we love to cook together and enjoy a family dinner every night. We have some individual pursuits, but my favorite times are spent enjoying life with Jim at my side.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was a freshman in college, my life came to a crossroad. I knew that I had to decide what I wanted my life to be like. At the same time, my family was going through several trials, so whatever choice I made would be mine alone. There isn't one definitive moment where I decided to be active in the church. Instead, it was a series of small and simple choices. For example, I remember deciding to pray every night before bed. That choice allowed me to draw closer to my Heavenly Father. In return, I wanted to know more of Him, so I began reading my scriptures daily. That in turn helped me understand more of his will in my life. With each step forward, I felt the reassurance of the Holy Ghost in the form of a sweet peace that the choices I was making were pleasing to my Heavenly Father. To this day, I am constantly learning ways to draw closer to my Heavenly Father and Savior. Why am I am Mormon? Because step by step, the gospel is leading me toward God, and I want Him in my life more than anything else.

How I live my faith

My faith guides my daily activities. I want to have a personal relationship with my Heavenly Father, so I read my scriptures every day and try to pray several times a day. These things help me feel closer to Him. My husband and I read scriptures and pray together every day. Though the temple is three hours away, we try to go often. I love these practices because I feel like placing God first in our relationship draws us closer together as a couple. Those blessings are extending to our children. Now that our daughter is old enough to understand prayer, she loves to remind us to pray several times a day. I am in the leadership of the Relief Society, our women's organization, for our local congregation. Often I am the youngest woman in attendance, so while I am organizing lessons and activities, the older sisters are actually teaching me and guiding me in my spiritual progression. I am assigned to visit three women from my congregation once a month. I prepare a short message to share with them. Whenever they need assistance, I am there for them to turn to. I, in turn, have people who visit me. In this way, all the members of our congregation take care of each other. Most importantly, I try to emulate our Savior in my daily life. He is my ultimate example and I want to be like Him.
