Hi I'm AJ McCleary

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest of five kids. I am a college student majoring in public health (most likely) :) My family has lived in four different states and three different time zones. I spent the last 7 years of my life in Western Washington. In high school, I played baseball and golf, and I also sang in the choir. I made some terrific friends from a variety of religious backgrounds. These friends had a great influence on the decisions that I made during high school. Now, I am a teacher at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. I have trials and struggles, but the Savior has strengthened and continues to strengthen me, so I am very happy!

Why I am a Mormon

I love Jesus Christ and His gospel. As a teenager, I began to study God's word as contained in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. As I read and studied the lives of prophets, regular people, and God's interactions with them, I found direction for my own life. I felt peace and joy. I asked God if the Bible was His word and I felt a similar peace. I asked God if the Book of Mormon was His word and I felt a similar peace. Now, as I seek to study God's word daily, attend Church weekly, pray often, and apply the principles that I am learning in my own life, I know that I am learning and improving every day! I am very happy and satisfied with life! I have found answers to the questions of my soul, including the purpose of life, where I am going after death, and how to find happiness and peace in the midst of trials. I have followed Christ's invitation to do His will and live His gospel (John 7:17) and I know for myself that His doctrine as contained in the Bible and the Book of Mormon is indeed "of God". I love my Savior and know that He is able to help everyone "according to their infirmities" (Alma 7:12). I can never deny what I know to be true!

How I live my faith

I get the chance to serve members of my local congregation by sharing messages centered on Jesus Christ and His gospel. I try to serve my neighbors by helping out with yard work. I also have one of the greatest opportunities in the world! I get to work with missionaries who are preparing to serve God's children in Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic States. We study the principles and ordinances of Christ's gospel in addition to the Russian language. On a personal level, I study God's word, pray, and attend church in order to further develop my relationship with Jesus Christ. As I try to do these things, it truly makes me happy!

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

AJ McCleary
I believe that some view the Mormon Church as a cult simply because of some misconceptions that they have about our beliefs and practices. As a missionary in Russia, I was accused of belonging to a cult almost daily. However, as we met with these people and shared with them what we truly believe, how we truly live, they came to find out that we are Christian people who believe in Christ and who strive to follow Christ and His teachings.
