Hi I'm Matt

Medical student. Husband. Father. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married with two children ages 2 and 4 months. My wife and I are currently living in the southern United States where we attend medical school. We are both from the west coast.

Why I am a Mormon

In this world right now, every day I look at the news and see how many things are going wrong. So many people attacking, slandering, lying, or cheating on others. There is no foundation upon which to build. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides such a foundation. It teaches precepts that help us to find true happiness no matter what is going on around us. The Gospel of Jesus Christ provides a way for us to raise our children to fulfill their potential and find true happiness in this life. It gives us the strength to stand tall even in adversity or temptation. Most importantly, when I prayed about the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith, there was an overwhelming feeling telling me this is true. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God and Joseph Smith was called as a prophet of God.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by attending church every Sunday, reading the scriptures daily, and teaching my family as often as possible about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. Since the precepts taught by this church have shaped my life, I live by them each and day. Each Sunday I teach a Sunday school class where a lesson is taught on a gospel principle, ie faith, repentance, baptism, etc.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

No, we do not worship Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith was a prophet, just like Moses, Peter, Abraham and others we read about in the New and Old Testament of the Bible. When he was a young man, he was trying to find the truth about God but was confused by the many different concepts being taught. He prayed to God and Jesus Christ about which church to join. Through that prayer, he was told that it would be through him that God's full truth would be restored to the earth as it had been when Peter, James, and John were on the earth. So we do not worship him, but we are grateful to him for restoring the church that Christ established when He was on the earth. Show more Show less

What is the difference between attending church and the temple?

Attending church is something we do every week in order to learn more about the gospel, to strengthen others around us, and to renew our baptismal covenants we have made by partaking of the sacrament bread and water. These are regular meeting houses that everyone can go into and learn about the Savior and feel welcome. The temple is what we call the House of the Lord. In the temple we make sacred covenants and perform ordinances with God and promise to obey these covenants, one such ordinance performed includes temple marriage. So we do not go to the temple every week to worship, that is what attending church is for. We attend the temple in order to make or renew sacred covenants and perform these sacred ordinances. Many people think the things that go on in the temple is a secret, this is not true! Anyone can go in as long as they first do the preparations required. In fact, we hope everyone will enter the temple. After they have adequately prepared, then they can go in and perform these sacred covenants with God for themselves. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Actually our lifestyle is like most people. You will find Mormons living all around you. We dress the same way you do and enjoy many of the same activities as others around us. We spend our everyday lives going to work and collecting a salary. We value our families because we know they come from God. So we often spend time teaching our families, or enjoying time spent with them. We also attend church every Sunday in order to grow closer to God and Jesus Christ. But you'll find we enjoy the same things you do, we like sporting events, vacations, the arts, and much more! Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Many people are afraid that inviting missionaries in their home means that they are joining the church. The missionaries come into your home to explain to you what the Church is. They explain why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is different than other churches, who Joseph Smith is, what the Book of Mormon is, and answer any questions you have about the Church. In order to help you understand if the Book of Mormon is the word of God, like the Bible is, they will give you a copy of the Book of Mormon to read on your own and invite you to pray about if it is true. If you want to learn more, they are willing and would love to teach you more, but the decision is up to you. They will answer your questions and teach as much as you would like. Show more Show less

How can I know Mormonism is true?

The great thing about the gospel of Jesus Christ, is that there is no one that can force you to join the Church. The purpose of the Church is to help everyone learn for themselves of God's love. We teach that in order to know if it is true, you need to pray about it for yourself. No one can tell you it is true but God. In the Book of Mormon, there is a scripture in Moroni 10:3-5 that tells us if we ask with sincerity, with real desire, believing God will tell us if the Church is true or not, then He will! I can't emphasize it enough though, we have to want to know it is true for ourselves with a desire to do what we are told. If we want to know it is true but won't change our lives no matter what God tells us, why should He tell us? If we really want to know, we will be willing to change our lives believing the answer we receive will make our lives better and be what God wants us to do. When we pray asking God if the Church is true, He will send the Holy Ghost to confirm it is true to us in our hearts. It will come as a warm, peaceful, comforting feeling. I testify that this is true! This is how God answers our prayers and when we pray with sincerity, asking God if it is true, anyone can know it is true by the feelings they receive from the Holy Ghost! This is how it happened for e. Show more Show less

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Yes! This is one of the greatest part of the gospel. Through the ordinances performed in the temple, we have the opportunity to be sealed to our spouse for time and for all eternity. This means that we can be with our spouse and family again after we pass from this life. It isn't just our spouse, but the children born to us. What joy this brings to my life knowing that if one of my kids or my wife were to die, that I would be able to see them again and live with them again! Show more Show less
